Germans storm France, Low Countries: On May 10, 1940, German tanks, troops, and bombers smashed into France and the Low Countries in a Blitzkrieg -- a swift attack with **bined air and mobile land forces -- that was totally unexpected by the Allies. However, with France near collapse, the Allies withdrew on June 8, leaving Narvik to German occupation.

The Norwegian **flict included the first paratrooper attack (by Germany) in history, and Britain's first major amphibious landing of the war (at Narvik). Germany had trouble taking Norway due to bad weather, strong fortifications, and tenacious Norwegian resistance. Adolf Hitler attacked Norway by land, air, and sea, overrunning resistance. Because of the known risks, enviro**alists have long fought to have fly ash categorized as a hazardous material, but they have faced stiff resistance from the energy industry, and now the **struction industry. On Aug. 15, 1952, the day the rain started, a**imated 90 million tons (82 million metric tons) of water coursed through the town of Lynmouth in just one day.
